CSM and St. Mary’s College of Maryland will kick off a five-part leadership and voter education series September 15 — International Democracy Day – with the inauguration of the Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Center for Leadership. The series of virtual community-focused events to promote voter education, civic engagement and personal empowerment are a collaboration between CSM’s Equity and Inclusive Diversity Office and Student Life Department and St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s (SMCM) Center for the Study of Democracy and its Student Activities Department and are aimed to prepare students and the Southern Maryland community for the upcoming elections.

 

  • The series kicks off on September 15, International Democracy Day, with the inauguration of the CSM Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. Center for Leadership. Messages from Democratic Maryland Senator Miller and Republican Governor Larry Hogan about leadership and lessons on bridging political divides will be followed by a panel discussion of student leaders from CSM and St. Mary’s College of Maryland on unity and the future of American Democracy.
  • The series continues with a National Voter Registration Day event on September 22 presented by the non-partisan League of Women Voters entitled “Your Vote. Your Choice. Your Future.”
  • On October 8, “A Pledge to Truth and Civility” with Michelle Christian and Cara Fogarty, will focus on the need for media literacy and civility in public discourse.
  • October 22 will feature “Liberty and Justice for All? The History of Voting Rights in America,” with Christine Arnold-Lourie.
  • The series concludes on November 10 with “Indivisible: A Post Election Debrief.”

Afternoon events (September 22 and November 10) are targeted to CSM and SMCM students, faculty, and staff. Registration is required for all events and links are provided below. Registered participants will receive links to each event two days before the event.

One Community: Bridging Divides: Tuesday, September 15, 2020. 7-8 p.m. The public is invited to listen and watch the inaugural event of the Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Center for Leadership which celebrates the leadership of Senator Miller and his legacy of reaching across the aisle to create positive change for Maryland. Messages from Democratic Maryland Senator Miller and Republican Governor Larry Hogan will share insights on leadership and lessons about bridging political divides with a focus on how all citizens can work together for the good of our communities. Student leaders from CSM and St. Mary’s College of Maryland will share thoughts on unity and the future of American Democracy in a panel discussion. Hosted by College of Southern Maryland’s Thomas V. National Voter Registration Day: Your Vote. Your Choice. Your Future. Tuesday, September 22, 2020. 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. League of Women Voters of Calvert County. Hosted by the College of Southern Maryland’s Student Life Department, Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. Center for Leadership, and Equity and Inclusive Diversity Office, and SMCM’s Center for the Study of Democracy and Student Activities Department. Registration is required for this Zoom event. Open to CSM and SMCM students, faculty, and staff. Join the League of Women Voters of Calvert County as we learn about the voting process, our voting options due to COVID-19, and resources and strategies for helping others to vote.

 A Pledge to Truth and Civility: October 8, 2020. 7 – 8 p.m. The public is invited to join CSM Professor of Communications Michelle Christian and CSM Instructor of Media Studies, former journalist and CSM Non-Profit Institute Coordinator Cara Fogarty as they discuss how to spot fake news, the importance of checking facts and sources of information, and a variety of strategies for maintaining civility while engaging in difficult political conversations. Liberty and Justice for All? The History of Voting Rights in America: October 22, 2020. 7-8 p.m. The public is invited to hear CSM Professor of History and Humanities and Social Sciences Department Chair Dr. Christine Arnold-Lourie travel through history to discover the evolution of American voting rights: How certain populations were denied the right to vote, the hard-fought battles to gain suffrage and discriminatory voting practices that still exist today. Indivisible: A Post Election Debrief: November 10, 2020. 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. We do not know what the results of the 2020 Election will be, but we do know that many of our neighbors will celebrate, and many will be frustrated—perhaps feeling despair. This moderated session will enable CSM and SMCM faculty, staff, and students to come together again to process thoughts and feelings about the election process and results and to begin to envision a positive path forward as one community. Hosted by the CSM Equity and Inclusive Diversity Office, Student Life Department, and Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. Center for Leadership, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Center for the Study of Democracy and Student Activities Department, registration is required for this Zoom event.
