The Chamber is engaged in modification of its Bylaws to reflect its new name and mission.:
Name: shall be known as Southern Maryland Minority Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
Mission: (1) To preserve the competitive enterprise system of business by focusing on economic development (the growth, creation and achievement of minority businesses), and entrepreneurship, while creating a better understanding and appreciation of the importance of entrepreneurs and minority businesses, and a concern for their problems; educating the business community and representing them, county, state and federal legislative and political affairs; preventing or addressing controversies, which would be detrimental to expansion and growth of entrepreneurs and minority businesses, and the community, if they should arise; creating a greater appreciation of the value of a more liberal investment of substance and self, on behalf of the interest of minority business; (2) To promote minority businesses and community growth and development by focusing on the growth, creation and achievement of entrepreneurs and minority businesses, while promoting economic programs designed to strengthen and expand the income potential of all businesses within the southern Maryland region; promoting programs of a civic, social and cultural nature, which are designed to increase the functional and aesthetic values of the community; and discovering and correcting abuses that prevent the promotion of business expansion and community growth..
The new focus will be Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. The Chamber is looking for new Board Members. The Chamber is also engaged in establishing The Southern Maryland Minority Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc., a 501 (C) (3) organization, which will enable the Foundation to pursue Grants for outreach and training for the Southern Maryland minority community. The State of Maryland incorporation is complete. Necessary paperwork has been submitted to the IRS for approval.
