Maryland ranks in the top 5 among U.S. states for defense spending. For that reason, the contraction of the Department of Defense (DoD) procurement budget raises concern as to the vitality of the State’s defense industry and its communities. This is especially true for regions like Southern Maryland that are particularly defense dependent. In response to this risk, Maryland’s Department of Commerce, Office of Military and Federal Affairs (OMFA) applied for and received a Defense Industry Adjustment (DIA) grant award from the DoD Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) in October 2014 to fund economic diversification planning activities to minimize the impact of DoD budget reductions on Maryland’s regional economies.
